How Weight Stigma Impacts Mental Health and Body Image

What Is Weight Stigma?

Weight stigma occurs when individuals are judged, treated differently, or blamed because of their body size. These experiences can happen at school, in the workplace, in relationships, online, and even in healthcare settings. (Emmer et al., 2020)

Weight stigma can also be internalized. This involves a person coming to believe the negative comments they hear regarding their body size. Rather than viewing these ideas as unfair or harmful, they may start to think that their body is a problem that needs correcting. (Bidstrup et al., 2022)

As time goes on, it can have an effect on how a person sees their body and on their mental health.

Weight Stigma and Body Dissatisfaction

A person experiences body dissatisfaction when they feel unhappy or uncomfortable about their body, and weight stigma can intensify these feelings. (Levinson et al., 2024)

With repeated exposure to the idea that some body types are more acceptable than others, individuals may start comparing themselves to unattainable standards, and social media, advertising, and discussions about dieting can increase this pressure. (Valle et al., 2021, pp. 276-292)

A person dissatisfied with their body might start avoiding certain types of clothing, social gatherings, photographs, and activities or situations where they think their body will be judged. What starts as discomfort with one’s appearance can later affect daily life. (Azevedo & Azevedo, 2023)

The Connection Between Weight Stigma and Eating Disorders

Weight stigma can also contribute to the development or exacerbation of disordered eating and eating disorders. (Levinson et al., 2024)

Someone who is ashamed of their body might start to restrict food, stick to strict diets, exercise too much, engage in bingeing, or adopt other behaviors in an attempt to alter their body. Such behaviors are not merely concerned with food or weight; they can develop into ways of coping with difficult emotions, shame, stress, or a wish to feel more in control. The Behavioral Health Impact of Weight Stigma

The impact of weight stigma does not end with body image and eating patterns; on repeated occasions when people are judged or treated unfairly, they may experience shame, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and social isolation. (Bidstrup et al., 2022)

A person who expects criticism might instead avoid other people or situations. They could feel uneasy about going for medical or mental health treatment because they are afraid of being blamed for their weight or of having their concerns ignored. (Puhl, 2023, pp. 417-428)

This can set up a tough cycle since stigma leads to emotional distress, emotional distress then influences daily behavior and relationships, and those experiences may in turn result in even greater shame. (Bidstrup et al., 2021)

Breaking the Cycle

Being overweight is not a personal failure. A person’s body size does not affect their worth, character, or value.

The first step in breaking the cycle is to realize just how greatly weight stigma can impact mental health and body image; this could involve questioning the negative beliefs you have about your body, reducing your exposure to harmful messages concerning weight, developing a healthier relationship with food and with physical activity, and getting support from a mental health professional if necessary.

You need not wait until body dissatisfaction or disordered eating has become severe before seeking assistance.

People should feel respected and supported no matter their body size. It is important to understand the effects of weight stigma if one is to establish a healthier relationship with themselves and to allow for mental health care that takes into account the entire person and not just their weight.
