Trauma / PTSD

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, assault or natural disaster. Short term reactions might include shock and denial. Long term reactions might include unpredictable emotions, intrusive memories, strained relationships and physical symptoms such as headaches or nausea. While these feelings are normal, some might have difficulty moving on with their lives.

  • Avoidance of spending time with friends or family
  • Avoidance of work or school
  • Feelings of shame, embarrassment, disgust and depression
  • Having plastic surgeries to change appearance
  • Obsessive thoughts or worries about perceived flaws
  • Spending large amounts of time examining themselves in a mirror
Different types of trauma encompass a spectrum of experiences that impact an individual's psychological and emotional well-being. Broadly categorized, there are three main types of trauma: acute, chronic, and complex.

Acute trauma typically results from a single distressing event, such as a natural disaster or a car accident, causing immediate and intense emotional reactions. Chronic trauma arises from prolonged exposure to stressors, such as ongoing abuse or living in a war zone, leading to persistent feelings of fear and helplessness. Complex trauma, often stemming from multiple or repeated traumatic incidents, such as childhood abuse or neglect, profoundly affects an individual's sense of self and relationships, frequently resulting in complex psychological struggles.

Understanding these distinct types of trauma is crucial for providing support and intervention for those who have experienced such adversity.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition in which the individual is triggered by a traumatic experience(s). Symptoms of PTSD might include:

  • Avoidance of people, places or activities that are a reminder of the experience
  • Changes in physical and emotional reactions
  • Emotional distress or physical reactions to reminders of the experience
  • Flashbacks
  • Negative changes in mood and thoughts
  • Nightmares
  • Recurrent, unwanted thoughts about the experience
  • Severe anxiety/panic
